Description

This 5-day Performance-Based Navigation (PBN I) course provides aviation professionals with a comprehensive understanding of PBN concepts, ICAO navigation specifications, and the practical application of Area Navigation (RNAV) and Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedures.

Participants will gain foundational knowledge of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) theory, airspace planning and design, instrument approach procedures, SIDs, and STARs. The course includes hands-on exercises and case studies to build competency in applying PBN concepts to operational and regulatory environments.

Key Topics

Module 1 – Introduction to PBN

  • PBN concepts and navigation specifications
  • Distinction between RNAV and RNP
  • ICAO vision and Assembly Resolution A37-11

Module 2 – Area Navigation

  • Conventional vs. Area Navigation
  • Route components and ARINC leg types

Module 3 – Area Navigation Systems

  • Navigation system technologies: DME/DME, IRU, INS, GNSS, GPS
  • System limitations and performance considerations

Module 4 – GNSS Theory

  • Core satellite constellations and GPS segments
  • Position determination, accuracy, and interference

Module 5 – GNSS Receiver & RAIM

  • Receiver functions and Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM)
  • Fault detection and exclusion

Module 6 – GNSS Augmentations

  • Wide and local area augmentations: SBAS, GBAS
  • Accuracy, coverage, and operational benefits

Module 7 – RNP AR Approach

  • Procedure segments and minima (DA/MDA)
  • Fix naming and approach chart design

Module 8 – Terminal Control Area (TMA), STARs, and SIDs

  • TMA airspace design, CDO/CCO operations
  • RNAV SIDs and STARs, Terminal Arrival Areas

Module 9 – Trajectory Management & ATC Separation

  • INGRESS/EGRESS points, holding airspace, route spacing
  • Target Level of Safety (TLS) and collision risk models

Module 10 – PANS-OPS Instrument Procedures

  • GNSS track separation
  • DME-based longitudinal separation standards

Module 11 – Regulatory & CAA Responsibilities

  • Roles of regulators, CAA, and Principal Operations Inspectors (POIs)
  • Global harmonization and implementation of PBN

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the ICAO PBN concept and its role in global aviation safety and efficiency.
  • Describe the role of PBN in Aviation System Block Upgrades (ASBU) and Continuous Descent/Climb Operations (CDO/CCO).
  • Distinguish between different types of Area Navigation (RNAV) systems.
  • Explain fundamentals of GNSS theory and navigation augmentation systems.
  • Identify basics of RNAV and RNP procedure design.
  • Summarize instrument approach procedures, SIDs, and STARs.
  • Apply PBN principles to airspace planning, route design, and navigation system integration.

Targe Audience

  • Air Traffic Controllers and ANSP managers

  • ATC procedures and airspace designers

  • Aircraft operators and flight operations personnel

  • Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) officials and regulators

  • Aviation safety and navigation specialists

Certificate

Upon completion, participants receive
a certificate of achievement.
